TECPLOT Version 9

Version 9 of Tecplot, the excellent and highly cost effective data visualization software produced by Amtec, will be released for Windows on April 2. Versions for other operating systems will follow. Tecplot users and people who would like to have a more effective way to analyze complex data or to just produce good technical diagrams should visit the Tecplot website . www.amtec.com to obtain a clear idea of Tecplot's capabilities. Those on maintenance will automatically receive version 9 at no charge. Version 9 contains many useful enhancements . details are given at

VISUAL FORTRAN USERS

Visual Fortran 6.5A updates the Compaq Fortran 90/95 compiler, run-time library, certain IDE components, the Array Visualizer, and the Visual Fortran documentation. The update corrects significant problems in version 6.5 so it is strongly recommended. It may be downloaded from.

http://www.compaq.com/fortran/visual/update-65A.html. From time to time Compaq issues a useful news-letter (December 2000 is the most recent issue). It is emailed to all owners who register with them

CPU CHIP UPDATE

The SPEC floating point benchmark is based on the execution speed of Fortran programs. Many find the SPEC results accurately reflect the performance of their Fortran programs on various hardware. While the Pentium 4 CPU has not been very well received by the media the SPEC results indicate that it has excellent floating point performance. Some SPEC2000FP results are Pentium 4 (1.4 GHz) 530, Athlon (1.2 GHz) 359, PIII (1GHz) 304, Alpha 21264B (833 MHz) 590, UltraSparc III (900MHz) 482, SGI R12000 (400MHz) 407, HP-PA8600 (55OMHz) 389, IBM Power 3-II (450 MHz) 356, and IBM PowerPC RS64-III (500MHz) 243. In Melbourne the price of a complete P4 1.4 Ghz PC with 128K of memory is less than $2800.
